‘You Can’t Move History’ is an output of our AHRC Care for the Future funded project on young people’s engagement with cultural heritage. The production process was a collaborative one that was experienced by academics, filmmakers and campaigners as an extremely positive creative and critical dialogue. Through the film – and the filmmaking process – we sought to understand and communicate the South Bank Undercroft community’s individual and collective attachments to the space, as well as the strategies and tactics used by activists to translate these heritage claims to the wider public. Working with three generations of skaters as well as the arts collective the BrazenBunch, we produced a film that remains true to the aesthetics and ethics of the Undercroft community – organizing inclusively and collectively, employing the visual language of skate media and prioritising the diegetic sound of the Undercroft – whilst also being accessible to wider publics beyond the skate community.
