The application of the H8 optimisation method to power system stabiliser design is studied in this paper. The weighting function selection and the application to multi-machine power systems are investigated in two separate parts. In this second part, it is shown that PSS design for multi-machine power systems can be translated into a problem of a series of sequential stabiliser designs. Each of them is for a very high order Single—Input Single—Output (SISO) ‘plant’ and can be formulated as an H8 mixed-sensitivity optimisation problem. The method developed in the first part for the selection of weighting functions is also used in this second part. Applying these to a model of a 10 machine 39 bus-bar power system shows a satisfactory performance.
