chapter
posted on 2023-06-08, 09:23 authored by Marcus Wood
This chapter constitutes the first in depth analysis of the construction of the American South in British consciousness from the War of Independence to the end of the Civil War. The first half of the article analyses engraving and etching in single sheet print satire form which portrayed the Southern States. The second half of the article uses print satires from 'Punch' to consider how British attitudes to the American South developed and shifted during the course of the Civil War.
