Modelling of a Compensation Scheme for OLED Degradation

A compensation scheme for OLED degradation based on a luminance-compensating subpixel architecture and a display controller with display-monitoring capabilities is proposed. The scheme is result of applying a system-level design methodology to the modelling of an OLED-display system. Originality: The first published research into system-level compensation for OLED degradation management. This paper incorporates two significant breakthroughs: a luminance-compensating subpixel architecture and a display controller with display-monitoring capabilities. Poor lifetime of Blue OLEDs is a key problem for OLED market deployment. Traditionally this has been addressed by organic chemistry research; however, system-level compensation is a new innovative approach to this problem. Rigour: A system-level simulation of the display controller has been created and is modulated by a compensation algorithm which in turn is driven by inputs from monitored OLED pixels. Although monitoring is confined to a small set of pixels (due to performance constraints) results show a significant extension of blue OLED lifetime. This not only extends the life of the display, but the novel sub-pixel architecture meliorates the effect of differential aging between the different coloured OLEDs. Significance: High International industrial significance. Suggests compensation for degradation effects is possible without the need for new and more expensive organic materials research. Additionally this research is applicable to other novel display technologies. Impact: Addresses key issue in the deployment of OLED technology and has attracted industrial interest from Philips. Outlet: The SID International Symposium is the top international symposium in the field of displays research and the associated digest is the most referenced publication in the field. At times run in association with the IEEE this conference is highly respected in the industry and has a significant research track record. The SID has been in existence since 1962. Citations: Two Google scholar citations.
