[Review] Loet Leydesdorff (2006) The knowledge based economy: modeled, measured, simulated

There are few original thinkers left in our field. Loet Leydesdorff is certainly an exception. Few scholars would, for instance, be able to connect notions derived from Husserl's phenomology to our quite mundane area of science and technology indicators. It takes an iconoclast of Leydesdorff's format to do so. He is also one of the regrettably ever smaller number of scholars who make a serious effort to integrate sociological perspectives with the economics of innovation. His latest book on the knowledge-based economy is a case in point. It summarises nearly three decades of research, combining insights from sociological systems theory with a multitude of other perspectives to offer suggestions for ‘operationalising’ through measurement and simulation the knowledge base of an economic system.
