Notes
This catalogue and exhibition is a monographic extension of my continuing research into post-war British art which has been pursued in previous exhibitions and accompanying catalogues, particularly in my curation of the Barbican Art Gallery exhibition, The Sixties Art Scene in London (1993). There has hitherto been no detailed account of the constructions, drawings and prints of the American-born sculptor Liliane Lijn who worked primarily in London, Paris and Athens in the 1960s and 70s. Drawing upon unseen manuscript material from the large personal archive of the artist, a fresh account of cross currents in British and continental is represented in the text. The catalogue examines her productions in relation to her intellectual milieu in Paris, especially the text-based work of the émigré Beat poets and the larger contexts of contemporary French art and thought around 1960. A primary aim is to recount the importance of a technocratic form of visual address which is constituent to her sculptural and graphic imagination. Lijn's intensive manifestations of neo-Modern and counter-cultural and utopian aspirations and positions are then examined in their progression into the 1970s.Full text available
