Notes
`I have searched for some time to find a thorough, readable account of French foreign and security policy suitable for students. That search is now over. Adrian Treacher's book provides an excellent examination of French foreign policy from the beginnings of Fifth Republic to date'. (book review by Kevin Wright, West European Politics [vol.27, no.5, November 2004]) This monograph stands apart with its distinction between strategic and tactical elements of French foreign and security policy and with its argumentation that the Fifth Republic has seen resolute, instinctive consistency regarding the former and numerous adaptations regarding the latter; indeed, these tactical adaptations have been made in order to attain the strategic objectives. This argument is put forward through the analysis of various case-studies through the lifetime of the Fifth Republic. Following publication of this book, Treacher was invited to speak on its content at a joint Sciences-Po/French Ministry of Defence conference held in Paris in June 2007.Full text available
