Abstract

This article describes a study of the ancient Basque musical tradition of the txalaparta. The research is different from earlier studies in that by digitising the instrument and its rules of playing, we have had to formalise the instrument and make explicit rules that hitherto have been tacit knowledge of improvisational practice. We have developed software that explores different aspects of the txalaparta rules, in order to analyse, describe, and understand a practice that has never received much musicological analysis or formalisation. By expounding musical patterns and performers’ behaviours that have hitherto been difficult to analyse we are able to reveal latent social and cultural aspects of the play. The software is a generative system that produces txalaparta rhythms and plays along with a human player, whilst learning and adapting to the player's style. The system offers a platform for novices in txalaparta to explore its traditional rules, and also for trained players to approach the instrument from a new perspective. In this research we have applied a user-centred approach, where feedback from players using the digital txalaparta was collected. The article reports on user studies that have allowed us to collect a reflective vision of the community of players of txalaparta and their opinions on the results of this research.
