Abstract

The 'Alhambra Cupola' is one of the key pieces in the collection of the Museum für Islamische Kunst at the Pergamon in Berlin. Crafted from hundreds pieces of carved wood, it was made for one of the first of the Alhambra palaces built by the Nasrid dynasty in Granada, Spain and remains one of the earliest and finest surviving ceilings from the palace. This book tells the fascinating story of the cupola, from its 14th century Islamic origins to its arrival in Berlin in the 19th century and its current display in the Berlin museum. With the focus remaining firmly on the cupola throughout, this book traces its biography to reveal the complex and dramatic history of this unique object. In the light of current debates on global art history and the place of objects in the Museum, this is a crucial time to re-examine the Alhambra cupola. As a tight and focused study of the object from its production to today, this book cuts across the traditional academic disciplinary and geographic boundaries of Islamic or western European art history, Spanish or German heritage, medieval or modern history, to reveal a new and insightful story of the continued presence and legacy of Islamic art in Europe.
