Michelangelo the ‘writer’ is the focus of this engaging collection of eight essays on Michelangelo Buonarroti’s poems and letters. Giuseppe Crimi, the editor, deliberately titled this special issue as a tribute to Walter Binni’s pioneering study Michelangelo scrittore (Rome: Edizioni dell’Ateneo, 1964; Turin: Einaudi, 1975). Indeed, although Michelangelo is still regarded as one of the geniuses of Italian Renaissance art and architecture, it is undeniable that since Enzo Noè Girardi’s critical edition of Michelangelo’s poems (Bari: Laterza, 1960) and the five volumes of Il Carteggio di Michelangelo, edited by Paola Barocchi and Renzo Ristori (Florence: Sansoni, 1965-83), his poetry and epistolary correspondence have been enjoying a flourish of critical attention. A new recent edition of Michelangelo’s poems and letters, Rime e Lettere, edited by Antonio Corsaro and Giorgio Masi (Milan: Bompiani, 2017), and Ambra Moroncini’s monograph, Michelangelo’s Poetry and Iconography in the Heart of the Reformation (London-New York: Routledge, 2017), are among the latest contributions on the subject.
