From Jacquard to JPEG
This was a presentation and panel discussion which took place as part of an Arts Council England funded exhibition in Macclesfield, Cheshire. Textile manufacture and silk weaving are the main source of conversation with regard to Macclesfield’s heritage. Also the association between the Jacquard Loom (many of which are housed in the town's Paradise Mill) and computing is often referred to. The links between the weaving technology and photography have not been interrogated however. The event included a tour of of Paradise Mill and demonstrations. Then the relationship between contemporary photographic digital image formats and the history of mechanically woven designs was introduced by Micheál O'Connell. This formed the basis of a debate with photographic artists Rut Blees Luxemburg and Mishka Henner who connected the theme, From Jacquard to JPEG, with their practices. Summary notes have been made available on-line.
