Baldwin’s rise to celebrity in the U. S. was mirrored by an equally strong public presence in Britain. In his role as a public interpreter of American race relations, Baldwin took an opportunity to deliver a few home truths to his British hosts. By considering his developing black Atlantic perspective, and re-reading his essay “Stranger in the Village” for the commentary it provides on the effects of decolonization in Europe, Baldwin’s public pronouncements on Britain are interpreted for the means they provided Britain to face the reality that, as he told the Daily Mail in 1965, “Britain is no longer white.”
