Collective action in digital China: a case study of the 2013 southern weekly incident
The 2013 Southern Weekly Incident was a confrontation of Chinese citizens against authority around the long-term issue of press freedom. It generated both online and offline action that pushed the limit of collective action in China. To understand people’s commitment to taking action, I introduce embodiment as a key factor for mobilising individuals in action. Then I present the case study of the 2013 Southern Weekly Incident, which I argue demonstrates the logic of connective action and individuals’ embodied mobilisation. A format of online and offline action being seemingly segmented by different groups of people is also highlighted in this case study, suggesting multiple action frames being facilitated by the use of the Internet in collective democratic action in China.
