This article lays out the research outline and questions for the PhD I begun in 2011, outlining the theoretical background to my study and the methodology that was planned. I am aiming to take a collaborative action research approach in my study and will look at issues that have come up while I have been gradually giving shape to my research proposal, and the practical implications for interviews and participant observation I hope to carry out in Sussex. I then explore the process I have gone through of forming research questions within this collaborative framework, and problems and issues I am encountering in doing interventionist research when having to negotiate institutional constraints and imponderables of access. Finally, I reflect on the ethical issues I am encountering in my research design, including the establishment of boundaries and relationships with stakeholders and study participants.
