Arbitrating beliefs about learning to write in the PhD writing workshop
In the course of the writing workshops we have provided for research students over the last four years, a challenge we have faced is participants’ mutually conflicting expectations of workshop process and content. This report describes the evolution of our feedback mechanisms, our interpretation of participants’ responses within the institutional constraints of our remit as writing tutors; and how we learned from both the character of the feedback mechanism and the variety of participant response.
