The effects of sodium chloride on the leaf ultrastructure and net photosynthesis of two varieties of rice (Oryza sativa L.), the land race Amber and the elite breeding line IR2153.26.3.5.2, were examined. Similar concentrations of salt in the leaf tissue had a greater effect in bringing about a disorganization of cellular structure and of decreasing net photosynthesis in Amber than in IR2153.26.3.5.2. It is argued that these data support the view that rice varieties differ with respect to a cellular component of salt resistance.
