Abstract

The article attempts to defend the idea of a poem as a context, on the one hand, against the easy and indeterminate contextualising that characterises a certain philosophical pragmatics (exemplified by Rorty's adaptation of Wittgenstein) and, on the other hand, against the intransigent refusal of context sometimes demanded by literary theory (exemplified by de Man's deconstruction). It offers a close reading of an intriguing parenthetical phrase in Wittgenstein¿s Philosophical Investigations and tries to demonstrate what might follow when we grant that it is uniquely a poem that can fully capture the second sense or use of understanding to which Wittgenstein is alluding.
