Abstract

The paper applies Goffman's model in Forms of Talk (1981), which problematises the speaker's role to include the triadic figure of the animator, principal and author. It is argued that such model can usefully, although not unproblematically, be adapted for an interpretation of speakers' stance in news discourse. The study uses a corpus of Italian and British TV news narratives and points to the linguistic markers of stance in the media discourse in the two contexts.
