This chapter reports on a qualitative research project with 25 creative writing students who undertook a guided fantasy writing exercise on what is termed the 'implicit reader in the writing process'. The data suggests that this writing exercise has enabled students to (a) identify and rehabilitate unresolved family relations, (b) redress an imbalance in the relationship with a harsh inner critic, and (c) develop a clearer sense of writing identity. These findings are understood through literary and psychodynamic theory.
