Abstract
This paper considers the impact of completing the European internal market (`1992', in a convenient short-hand) on the EC's international trade. It concentrates on quantifying the positive aspects of the trade in goods, particularly with non-EC countries. It considers the issue in terms of the traditional concepts of customs union theory, discusses what does or does not constitute a `1992' effect, and briefly surveys some of the few estimates extant.
