Additional Information: | The substantial recent literature on industry and innovation `clusters tends to emphasise internal structure at the cost of playing down extra-cluster links. The paper uses quantitative evidence to show that the heterogeneity of the knowledge base within a cluster impacts upon the clusters `absorptive capacity for taking in developments occurring outside. |
