AIED 2001 Workshop on External representations in AIED: Multiple forms and multiple roles edited by Shaaron Ainsworth and Richard CoxThe papers presented at this workshop address many issues concerning the role of external representations (ERs) in Artificial Intelligence in Education. Broadly speaking, four main theme emerge: 1. ERs that function as interfaces to and displays of domain knowledge (ie. the subject matter of a discipline); 2. ERs in the context of modelling environments and in support of model-building activities; 3. The social and communicative aspects of ER use; and (resonating with the main conference's keynote), 4. Newer forms of representation facilitated by technological developments such as VR.
