Additional Information: The phenomenon of multi-technology companies, that develop technologies far broader than what appear to be germane to their product profile, has been analysed since about 1990. This paper in an international premier journal asks why they need to do this, in contrast with the outsourcing of production; finding the answer in unforeseen eventualities of technological\ imbalances and interdependencies. Dr Prencipe co-developed the concepts with Dr Brusoni and provided the main case study.
