Notes
The article appeared in this increasingly prestigious refereed journal and set out to determine to what extent the Union's militarisation in the late 1990s was down to the irresistible, internal pressure of European integration and to what extent it can be attributed to the fall-out from various external pressures. It argued that although militarisation may have occurred eventually, as a logical part of the integration process, its actual timing was due primarily to outside factors. There certainly needed to be a certain existing level of trust between the member states, but the crucial elements were, in particular, the end of the Cold War and the lessons drawn from the Union's role during the collapse of Yugoslavia.Full text available
