This paper describes an analysis scheme which was developed to probe the comprehension of computer programming languages by students learning to program. The scheme operates on free-form program summaries, i.e. textual descriptions of a program which are produced in response to minimal instructions by the researcher/experimenter. The scheme has been applied to descriptions of programs written in various languages, and it is felt that the scheme has the potential to be applied to languages of markedly different types (e.g. procedural, object-oriented, event-driven). The paper first discusses the basis for the scheme, before describing the scheme in detail, It then presents examples of the scheme's application, and concludes with a discussion of some open issues.

Additional Information: Originality: Describes a new, interdisciplinary methodology for gauging computer program comprehension by analysing free form descriptions of computer programs using a detailed analysis scheme. Rigour: Empirically derived analysis scheme which was subsequently applied to new data sets from different programming languages. Significance: Scheme has been applied and extended by a number of other researchers. Impact: Researchers at the University of Limerick (OShea, Exton, Buckley, Hughes, OCarroll) have extended scheme to look at concurrent languages. At University of Joensuu, scheme has been used by Bednarik, Myller, Sutinen, Tukiainen, and also Sajaniemi, Byckling, Kuittinen, Nevalainen (the latter published a paper entitled An Inter-Rater Reliability Analysis of Goods Program Summary Analysis Scheme). Total citations (from Google Scholar) for this paper, its preceding conference paper, and Good's thesis work (on which the paper is based) = 38.
