Notes
The article addresses methodological and ethical challenges of researching sensitive topics with children (in this case sexual and other forms of abuse), including the risks of engaging them in participatory research. Its original contribution lies in its highlighting of cross-cultural understandings of what constitutes appropriate research with children. It was peer reviewed by three international referees. It draws on experience of 8 years of DFID funded research into the abuse of girls in schools in three African countries, for which the faculty member was principal investigator. There is now considerable evidence of impact of this research on education policy across the sub-Saharan African region, in part brought about through widespread dissemination of research findings from this and other studies identified by the principal investigator, through two websites and a series of newsletters as well as project reports and academic publications.Full text available
