A combined experimental and computational study throws light on the structure and bonding of the diamagnetic {(SnN)2} compound [{Sn{N(SiMe3)}Cl}2] (see picture), obtained from the reaction of [Sn{N(SiMe3}2)(µ-Cl)]2 with AgOCN.

Additional Information: HC performed all theory and co-authored the paper in collaboration with MFL. Experiments by LJMP and MFL, crystallography PBH. First three-coordinate tin compound which is not ionic or free radical; confirmed by theory. Calculated NMR chemical shifts fundamental to interpretation of discrepancies between the solid-state and solution NMR spectroscopic data.
