Do we know how science works? A brief history of the scienti?c method

The new programme of study for key stage 4 science (14–16 year-olds) in the National Curriculum for England has, as an underpinning approach, How science works. The Qualifications and Curriculum Authority includes in this approach ‘scientific method’. This article provides some background information on the development of the scientific method across the history of scientific working and asks which, if any, school of thought we should apply to school science.
