Notes

Surprisingly invertebrates have a different family of gap junction genes (innexins) than vertebrates (connexins). Our results demonstrate that diploblasts evolved innexins for gap-junctional communication, the connexins arose de novo in deuterostomes. Davies was co-supervisor of Alexopoulos.
