Discusses whether the French Commercial Code could be used as a model for the codification of UK commercial law. Argues that, contrary to received opinion, the UK does have a tradition of codification and traces its history. Explores how commercial law could be defined for the purposes of codification and questions how consumer and international law could be incorporated. Outlines the principles of codification and notes some of the advantages, including simplification of language and correction of inconsistencies and loopholes. Considers how codified law could be kept up to date.
