Abstract

The book demonstrates that numerous literary texts contain covert plots, plot-sequences so elliptically presented that they may be overlooked for many years; when they are at last perceived, the works (whether by Ibsen, Conrad or others) are transformed. (For instance, I identify the covert plot of 'Almayer's Folly' and 'The Wild Duck', unidentified for about a century.) Some texts are linked by transtextual narratives: plot-sequences in, between and across two or more works. When these transtextual narratives are perceived, each work is changed.
