Abstract

Modern prescription drug regulation began in the UK in 1971 and in 1962 in the US. Between 1971 and 1992, the US has been found to have more stringent drug regulation and less drugs withdrawn from the market due to lack of safety than the UK. This has been explained by more `arms-length adversarial relationship the US regulatory agency and the pharmaceutical industry in this period compared with the situation in the UK. However, changes in political and regulatory contexts in the US and UK since 1992 make this contrast implausible in the post-1992 period.
