Additional Information: There is strong interest in the development of Erbium implanted substrates for optical communication applications. Implantation provides unique control over dopant placement which makes it an attractive technique for the development of optical devices. Repeatable, well controlled Erbium implantation is quite challenging and this research required development of techniques and equipment coupled with extensive experience of implantation for optical waveguides, which has been employed in further research and publications in this area in both the UK and Japan.
