Additional Information: DWY is corresponding author and directed the synthetic work. The work reports the first ubiquitin variants in which selected leucine residues in the hydrophobic core have been replaced by (2S,4S)-5-fluoroleucine residues. Protein X-ray crystallographic, 19F-NMR and biophysical methods were used to show that protein folding was unafected.
