Notes

This paper is based on doctoral research which the author undertook through the Graduate Assistantship scheme funded through the University of Sussex. While much research in South Africa has focused on policy contexts, little looks at how this policy is being translated into practice. This paper's innovation lies in the way it looks at policy-in-practice within the social practices and socio-historic contexts of schooling in four diverse schools in South Africa. Specifically it provides insights into the processes and practices around policy implementation in the post-apartheid period, and highlights the influential role socio-historical contexts continue to have within and between schools. It also explores the role teachers play in encouraging and maintaining conflict within schools, an area which has previously been unexplored in South African educational research.
