In Volume 1 of this book we examined a series of country case studies of Euroscepticism in party systems across Europe. As we examined the range of data presented in that volume, clear patterns were identified on the basis of which we developed a typology of three kinds of party competition over Europe: limited, open, and constrained contestation (Taggart and Szczerbiak 2008a). The data in that volume were gathered as a 'mapping exercise' of Euroscepticism in party systems in order to discern and inform the broad parameters of subsequent research. In Volume 2, we build on this by shifting the focus from country case studies to a range of comparative and theoretical questions that take us beyond these preliminary findings. In this chapter, we begin by setting out a broad research agenda of comparative and theoretical issues for the study of Euroscepticism and highlight how the various chapters in this volume contribute towards answering some of the most important questions raised.
