Exploring the relationship between environmental collaboration and business performance with mediating effect of responsible consumption and production

In 2015, United Nations Members agreed to adopt the 2030 agenda for sustainable development, which involves 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). While the SDGs (from SDG 1 to SDG 16) are directed toward specific areas of action, SDG 17 acts as a facilitator to attain different goals (Hák et al., 2016). SDG 17 refers to the “partnership for the goals” as a means rather than an end statement. It also offers a shared vision of how the various goals can be achieved (Vazquez-Brust et al., 2020). It focuses on the significance of partnerships for sustainable development based on the assumption that associations can mobilise a wide range of stakeholders to share knowledge, technology, expertise, and resources to achieve the global development agenda (Pruzan-Jorgensen, 2020). The partnership approach to development seems promising and is gradually becoming an integral part of businesses. The SDGs have formed a novel sustainable development paradigm as it recognises companies as an essential social sector. Sullivan et al. (2018) suggested that responsible consumption and production (RCP) and climate action are relevant for industrial ecology among all the SDGs. Companies can act as a pillar to support and contribute to RCP (SDG 12) by entering into several collaborative practices. RCP ensures sustainable consumption and production activities by fostering efficient usage of natural resources and reducing wastages across the value chain. The success of RCP practices is directly linked to the strengthened collaboration of its actors (Meschede, 2020). Extant literature reported that collaborative efforts are essential for interorganisational relationships that open avenues for RCP (Vachon & Klassen, 2006). Firms must work closely with their collaboration partners to efficiently utilise their capabilities to mitigate the overall impact on the environmental footprint (Gölgeci et al., 2019).
