How people on low incomes experienced the recent global economic downturn. This report examines what being part of the global economy means for people living in poverty, focusing on experiences of the 20092010 recession. It identifies areas where welfare reform is necessary to protect poorer people from a more volatile world economy. The report: examines the effects of the recession on work and local economies in deprived areas in rural Northern Ireland, East Sussex and Lancashire; identifies the impact of high food and fuel prices on everyday life and well-being; discusses forms of state and non-state support that helped people on low incomes during the recession; and looks at how global social and economic connections shaped people's experiences of, and responses to, the recession.
