Abstract

This chapter argues for the importance of understanding contemporary South American cinema within the framework of transnationalism. To better understand how contemporary transnational Latin American cinema works across the region, this chapter begins by tracing the concept of transnational cinema as it has emerged in film studies and in particular how it is situated within broader discourses around Latin American national cinema. The chapter goes on to explore the cinema in which these discourses are employed – art/independent cinema - looking at films from Latin America’s art cinema resurgence arguing that these exemplify how transnational flows of capital and creativity impact on Latin American cinema. It focuses in particular on two films by Peruvian director Claudia Llosa—Madeinusa (2006 Perú/Spain) and La teta asustada (The Milk of Sorrow Perú/Spain 2009) — as representative of a key paradigm of transnational cinema: the festival funded film. Centering on Llosa’s films, but also drawing in other art house films from Latin America, this chapter lays out the histories and cultural politics of the funding bodies which finance films from the Global South. It explores what the links are between these films’ transnational funding structures and their aesthetic features and what the study of Llosa’s films and the art cinema resurgence brings to the understanding of transnational cinema in South America.
