La 'mémoire humiliée' et sa narration: Annie Ernaux et la 'communauté' internationale des transfuges de classe

chapter
posted on 2023-06-08, 18:41 authored by Lyn Thomas
This chapter analyses published life narratives by four class migrant intellectuals from France and Britain: Annie Ernaux (La Honte), Carolyn Steedman (Landscape for a Good Woman), Pierre Bourdieu (Esquisse pour une autoanalyse) and Richard Hoggart (A Local Habitation, Life and Times: 1918-1940). It considers the similarities and differences in their accounts of changing class through education, and discusses the intersection of this trajectory with gender, historic context, and intellectual discipline. The chapter is followed by comments by Annie Ernaux and the editors' summary of the ensuing discussion, which took place at the Centre Culturel International, Cerisy in July 2012.
