Abstract

The Cosmopolitan Lyceum: Lecture Culture and the Globe in Nineteenth-Century America is a collection of scholarly essays on the topic of American popular lecturing between 1800 and 1912. It brings together the work of eleven scholars from Canada, the US and UK, ranging across the disciplines of history, communication, rhetoric and literary studies. The majority of these essays were presented at a special two-day conference hosted by the American Antiquarian Society in September 2011. It is under contract to be published by the University of Massachusetts Press during 2013.
