Exhibited at Soto Gallery, Boston (2005), ACM Multimedia, Singapore (2006), and Fabrica Gallery, Brighton (2006) `Impossible Geographies 01: Memory¿ (IG01) is a digital exhibition created in collaboration with Petra Gemeinboeck, University of Sydney. The piece (IG01) was the first in a series of works and provided the technical and conceptual groundwork for what would later become a collection of Impossible Geographies projects and collaborations. At its core, IG01 extends contemporary digital media research into ways that digital systems might be used to create the experience of performative space in built environments. It does so by combining live, generative sound (Krell) and video (Gemeinboeck) with traces or memories of previous moments in the life of the exhibition through the use of laser/sensors and custom programming by the artists to create a spatially-aware system for the creation and recollection of memory. While occupying specific roles in the production of the project (Krell created all of the sonic environments and structures while Gemeinboeck developed the visual and video experiences), the two artists worked together to develop the interactive experience and underlying structures for the piece during a series of virtual meetings and an artists¿ residency in Boston 2005. IG01 builds upon Krell¿s work with fluid narratives (seen in her other submissions, `Imaginary Evidence¿ and `Transformer¿) while extending interactive experiences created by Gemeinboeck by allowing visitors to tell stories or perform actions which become a part of the work¿s fabric of memory. IG01 was named a `top interactive exhibit¿ by Boston Globe (2005). The work and artists were featured at the symposium, `BeHere: Presence Beyond the Screen¿ (2006). A short paper about it was published at the ACM Multimedia Conference (2005) and the work was presented at the CAA conference (2006).
