Abstract

Using extensive documentary and interview research the project explores systematically the social, political and technical reasons for withdrawal and in decisions regarding particular cases. Specific hypotheses concerning comparative pre-approval safety standards, regulatory efforts in postmarketing surveillance of adverse drug reactions and differences in British and American industrial strategies are investigated. The project focuses on about 20 cases of drug withdrawals in both countries, involving documentary fieldwork and interviews with industrial scientists, regulators and other important ectors on both sides of the Atlantic
