The theory and hardware implementation of an innovative time-domain fluorescence lifetime sensing algorithm using centre-of-mass methods (CMM) is presented. Unlike most commercially available systems heavily reliant on slow post-processing routines, the CMM is hardware-friendly and can be implemented with high-speed programmable digital circuitry. It provides a near-ideal photon efficiency that a traditional frequency-domain technique cannot compete with.
