Abstract

This publication presents the findings from a systemic review of knowledge relating to current practice in the teaching, learning and assessment of law in social work education. The work was commissioned by Social Care Institute for Excellence (SCIE) as part of its research programme to support the introduction from 2003 onwards of new social work degree qualifications in the United Kingdom. The review comprised two pieces of research, an international research review and a UK-based practice survey. The research review has evaluated relevant published and unpublished materials. The practice survey has identified the range of approaches taken within programmes, and the views of those involved in teaching, learning and assessment, including educators, students and practice teachers. The views of a wider range of stakeholders including service users, carers and practitioners have also been sought through two consultation events to discuss and advise on both aspects of the study. Guidance from SCIE (2003) clearly identifies the value of participation by a wide range of stakeholders in its commissioned work. Equally, the participation of service users and carers, and of employers, is a core requirement for the social work degree across the UK. The research has adopted a broad and inclusive approach. An Integrative Analysis brings together and comments upon the findings from all sources.

Item Type: Reports and working papers (Other)
Additional Information: Peer reviewed through rigorous quality assurance processes, this publication constitutes the only systematic review of evidence in the subject area. It informed further theorisation by the authors on the relationship between law and social work, giving rise to six peer reviewed journal publications, conference papers in Australia, the UK, Slovenia and Cyprus, an invited symposium in Hong Kong, an invitation to lead a researcher/practitioner event in Sweden and an award-winning innovative e-learning resource launched with government backing in July 2007. This substantial body of work has received significant international attention and is regarded as a major reference point, leading the field.
