Abstract

This chapter is divided into three sections: 1. Narrative Theory; 2. Explanatory Power and 'Exile Literature'; 3. History of Journalism and the History of Fiction Writing. The chapter looks at emerging narrative theory and practices and their relation to literary canons. Its main purpose is to present and discuss the frameworks under which recent books recon- sider narratives as well as to evaluate the impact of the theory on the resulting narratives, be they literary history or history of criticism. Following this thread, books on general narrative theory stand next to books on more enclosed narrative paradigms. However, with every example, the focus is on the cross-boundaries between theory of narrative, literary history and literary criticism and on the surfacing of meanings which release their own narrative through critical tools, historical perceptions, and pro- posed corpuses of texts. The first section is dedicated to the reconsideration of narrative theory proposed by Rick Altman in A Theory of Narrative. The second considers the use and explanatory power of 'exile literature' in the collection of essays Writing Exile: The Discourse of Displacement in Greco-Roman Antiquity and Beyond, edited by Jan Felix Gaertner and in Exile and Journey in Seventeenth-Century Literature by Christopher D'Addario. The third section looks at the overlap between the history of journalism and the history of fiction writing, as examined by Doug Underwood in Journalism and the Novel: Truth and Fiction, 17002000. The aim is to consider the impact of theoret- ical approaches of narratives on the constitution of narrative corpuses and on literary canons with reference to a broad catalogue, from ancient literature and history to contemporary narratives.
