Abstract

This monograph examines the 'spectral' influence of Victorian spiritualism and Psychical Research on women's writing. Using a wide range of unexplored archival materials, the book analyses the ways in which modern and contemporary writers have both subverted and mimicked 19th century sources in their evocation of the seance. It pays particular attention to the ways in which vital questions of gender, class and identity are played out through the neo-Victorian genre.
