Abstract

ESRC Teaching and Learning Research Programme (TLRP) Thematic Seminar Series - Seminar Three - Thematic Seminar Series - Contexts, communities, networks: Mobilising learners resources and relationships in different domains This third seminar in the series focusses upon Technology, learning relationships and networks. This paper mainly addresses two of those topics, namely learning relationships and technology. In relation to the former, we describe research on vicarious learning (VL - learning by observing the learning of others). With respect to the topic of technology, an existing, established online e-learning system (PATSy) is being used extensively in our research. The system (PATSy) is a case-based teaching and learning resource used for training students of medicine, health science and clinical psychology. It plays a central role in several phases of our project. Our aim is to extend PATSy by adding vicarious learning resources to it. The structure of the paper is as follows. The first section introduces the concept of vicarious learning, outlines its origins and provides an overview of relevant research. The second section describes the PATSy system. The third section describes our research on students clinical problem solving and our findings on the difficulties that they experience in learning to reason diagnostically. Subsequent sections describe how vicarious learning resources designed to assist students with those difficulties are being developed and how they will be incorporated into PATSy. The paper concludes with a discussion of the implications of our research for other professional domains such as initial teacher education.
