Abstract

Liberal democracies and the international community they dominate rely on white lies like consensus, the representation of objective interests, and the legitimising power of public opinion. The contrast between recent developments in international law and realpolitik increasingly undermines them. Is it possible to give up pretences in international relations, and if so, how would that affect the internal affairs of democracies?
