Abstract

Report on research project 'Enquire' which aims to investigate the role of galleries in supporting a wider educational experience for young people. Project funded by DFES and DCMS and administered by the arts Council of England

Additional Information: This research project sought to investigate the impact of cultural encounters between young people and cultural producers (specifically, schoolchildren and artists), and to evaluate the circumstances under which this was significant or `transformative¿. Involving groups from across England and funded by the Departments for Education and Skills and Culture, Media and Sport and managed by the Arts Council of England, its findings will influence future government policy in funding culture and education, and allow the relation between the two to be taken into account. Aldred was the sole HEI representative in the South East group. She put together the bid, identifying and approaching co-researchers with a range of expertise - collecting data, designing questionnaires, undertaking focus group work, and implementing action research. This ensured an array of appropriate tools and methodologies. She co-ordinated the south east `cluster¿ in research design and management and acted as its representative in critical debates with the other two HEIs (Newcastle and the Institute of Education). She evaluated the methods and suggested additional approaches as issues came up through the action research. Aldred also played a key role in the planning, co-ordination and delivery of the research. She wrote up the findings from the researchers in the field. She ensured that empirical findings were related to debates and approaches in the broad field of cultural studies. In co-writing a chapter of the final publication, she highlighted ways in which experience of art can be understood as a form of `everyday symbolic and communicative work¿ in the lives of young people, and considered the importance of devising a shared language of enquiry which was crucial to the success of the project.
